Pause (or beat) - a VERY effective comedy tool that is hard to master. Knowing when to take a pause (or miss a beat)... what to do during that pause... how long the pause should be and then what to follow the pause with.

Premise - A central concept/belief from which a joke or series of jokes or routing is taken. See Timing. Dodd premises a world where cucumbers are posted through letterboxes with shouts of "The Martians are coming". Eddie Izzard premises a world where wolves drive sports cars to enjoy their ears flapping in the wind.

Punch-line - (also called Pay-off) the point of the joke. The point at which the true joke surprise is revealed. The point at which the audience laughs or are supposed to in an ideal world. Not to be confused with narrow gauge railway in North Wales hosting a Victorian Seaside puppet show known locally as the Punch and Judy) line.
