Segue - Part of a script that links two pieces of material (that are not necessarily linked). This is a dangerous term and has been known to implode spellcheckers. It should not be confused with sea uge which is projectile vomiting from a ferry deck.

Set - See routine

Set-up - The initial part of a joke that sets the scene or base assumption that is then exposed as wrong by the punch line

Stand up Comedy - To take the floor and usually a microphone in-front of an audience and make them laugh. Dave Allen was a famous comedian who didn't stand-up to deliver his comedy.

There are also a number of wheelchair based stand-ups highly visible in the Royal Mile during the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Stand-up Comedy has its' origins in music hall in the UK and the equivalent Vaudeville in the USA. It is international with the Australians, South Africans, Canadians and the Irish having a surprisingly strong contingent.

Stolen - material belonging to another comic. Easier said that proved. Comedy is not unlike the folk music process whereby all material is dependent on the comedy that has gone before. The trick is to adopt, adapt and improve - or even subvert it. There is little absolutely new under the comedy sun, one can however represent material via comic character, delivery or mix of techniques. You will do it, even by accident, but try not to be obvious. You may have to do it to get started at all.

Storm (to storm) - to give an excellent comedy performance

Surreal - To talk about bizarre or imaginary subjects. To go off on strange flights of fancy not linked to normal reality. Kings of surreal comedy would be Paul Merton, Ross Noble, Eddie Izzard and Jason Byrne.
